A police officer, Sub-Inspector (SI) Chanchal Chandra Sarkar, has been arrested from Khagrachari in connection with the shooting of a student hanging from the cornice of a building in Rampura, Dhaka, during the July movement.
He was arrested on Sunday night (January 26) at around 9:30 PM from Dighinala by a special police unit from Dhaka, under the supervision of Assistant Attorney General Tanveer Hasan Johar of the International Crimes Tribunal.
This was confirmed by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dighinala Police Station, Mohammad Zakaria. He stated that a special police unit from Dhaka, led by Tanveer Hasan Johar, arrested Chanchal Sarkar, who was stationed at Dighinala Police Station, and brought him to Dhaka under police custody.
During the preliminary interrogation, Chanchal acknowledged being present at the scene of the incident but denied shooting the student. After his arrest, Chanchal was transferred to Dhaka under police escort, as confirmed by the OC.
